Assignment # 1  Playing with your pencil

Materials: Pencil (recommend 2B-6B any of them is fine) and your sketchbook

What to do:

1. Tilt the pencil from 60-130 Degree and see how the line turns out.
2. Change the way to hold the pencil and tilt the pencil to 150-180 Degree and see how different

Shading of Greyscale

We usually talk about" black, grey and white "
but in reality of the greyscale can divide to
" darkest, dark grey, grey, light grey and lightest "
and more than that

Every time we draw something, try to use all the shade of greyscale. There will be darkest (black), variety of grey tone and lightest (white or highlight).

Understand how to use pencil

This can explain why normal graphite pencil is better for drawing than mechanical pencil or pen.

According from the picture above, we can see the differences when you tilt the pencil or change the pressure of your hand.

Note When we write we mostly use our wrist to control the line. But I would like to recommend you to try using your shoulder. You will see that the line will be easier to control and more flow.

When you tilt the pencil around 60-130 Degree, the line will be sharp and thin. This is the most use for drawing, line art like comics or drafting.

When you change the way to hold the pencil ( follow from the photo above ) and tilt pencil down to 150 - 180 Degree, the line will change to less sharp and solid. We can see that the line looks similar to charcoal or chalk. We use this for the sketch, making texture and shading. If you have been studying in drawing class, some instructors will recommend you to do this for gesture drawing and outline studying.
(I recommend you to sharpen your pencil manually, just be careful of the cutter!)

I suggest that you should try playing with your pencil. Not just the way we used to know but make your pencil becomes a powerful tool. You will be surprised how a pencil can do! : )
